Data Storytelling is the art of guiding our audience smoothly through analysis & insights.
My methodology when it comes to designing reports for my users:
-DESIGN FOR END USERS My key focus is to design easy to navigate reports with simple layout and presenting insights which assist in decision making
-DEVELOP FOR NEXT BI DEVELOPER Focus on Solid data model | Measure branching | Formatted DAX as someone will need to alter your reports one day
-AGILE BI MINDSET: Following principles which focus on project delivery, flexibility & engaging in regular stakeholder collaboration for a successful outcome
⚡ Importantly, remembering that a good report is NOT the one which computer understands, its the one which humans do!
The first pillar of successful report building is data loading and transformation. Have summary below list of items which should ideally be checked off before we proceed towards report development
-DISABLE FEATURES
Auto Date/ Time (Under Global/ current file settings)
Auto-detect new relationships
-ACTIVATE CROSS FILTERING: Cross highlighting is the default visual interaction
-IDEALLY SEPARATE PBI DATASET FROM THE REPORT: Can help promoting and certifying datasets for DEV
-DEDICATED DATE TABLE: Create extended date table & mark it as Dates Table to enable time intelligence
-ORGANISE DATA MODEL IN POWER QUERY: Put queries in groups and label, Disable queries not being used
-TRANSFORMATION (POWER QUERY):
Filter Data: CHOOSE COLUMNS required in model & use auto-filter for loading ROWS required
Query Folding: Filter Rows, Choose Columns, Rename Columns as the first transformation step
Use consistent names for columns, queries, power query steps, folders etc
Data Type: LINKING columns in separate queries MUST be same data type, Split Date/Time, Adjust Data type
VISUALIZATION
DAX Measure: Use formatted DAX coding and create FOLDERS to group measures
Native Visuals: Use native visuals and adopt simple design methodology
PROJECT: REVENUE DASHBOARD
- Dashboard showcasing power of background templates using Power Point
(Design Concept: Leonardo Karpinski)
PROJECT: PERFORMANCE INSIGHTS
- Selection of Key Metrics
-Cumulative vs PY and Divergence is an informative "All in One" visual for cumulative
-Heat Map to highlight Maximum Sale

PROJECT: 2019 LONDON POLICE CRIME REPORT
Visuals Used:
Map, Tree Map, Tables and Line Chart, Area Chart, line Chart.
-One of my first projects in dark background, with use of right colors and clean designing techniques the single page dashboard gives a good overview of crime data
PROJECT: COVID-19 IMPACT ON GLOBAL STOCK MARKET
-Update on the number of cases globally
- Demonstrate the impact of the virus on the Global Stock markets from the 08.02 to the 08.03
PROJECT: SALES ANALYSIS
- Complete overview of sales
- Drill-through feature on Category
Comparison of Current year vs Previous year figure
- Percentage increase/ drop month by month visual
- Sales ranking on the bottom panel is a great tool to analyze
